Scopes Trial Play tickets on sale for 2027
One hundred and two years ago, John Scopes was a new, unknown science teacher at Rhea County High School in Dayton, Tennessee. He actually was making a name for himself as the new football coach at Rhea Central High School that fall of 1924.
But by the following June, most of America—and more than a few people around the world—recognized his name: the teacher charged with teaching human evolution to his students.
All these years later, the trial still causes a stir, not so much about creation and evolution, but about headline issues such as who controls public schools? What rights do minorities have to make their wishes known? What role should religion have in public discourse.
Plan now to see a dramatic, historically accurate, retelling of the Scopes Trial story in the same courtroom where the trial (or at least most of it) was held. Tickets for Destiny in Dayton are on sale now at www.rheaheritage.com/scopes-trial-play/.
Hear the arguments from William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow, the testimony of Scopes’ students, the defense of science—and religion—from the characters who made the “little case” an argument that still reverberates today.
Tickets are on sale but check Facebook postings as the Rhea Heritage Preservation Foundation announces activities planned for July 16, 17, 23 and 24, 2027, as we remember—and celebrate—the Trial of the Century!
