May 22, 1925—THIS DAY IN SCOPES HISTORY
The Dayton Progressive Club commits to raising $5,000 ($87,200 in 2023) to “tell the world about Dayton.” Although members of the group insisted that John Scopes’s upcoming trial was not a publicity stunt, they also noted that they “cannot see why Dayton should not reap the benefits.”
This information is taken from “Causes Go On Forever…: A Chronology of the Scopes Trial,” by Randy Moore and Tom Davis. Copies of the book are available from the Rhea County Historical Society, P.O. Box 31, Dayton, TN 37321. Cost is $25.
